Being a doctor is one of the mostly favored profession, but not all can afford to enroll for medical education because of the expenses involve. In the Philippines, the average tuition fee in private schools may range from Php70,000 to Php150,000 per semester. Additional Php50,000 or more for miscellaneous fees, medical equipment, books, and other school-related expenses.
That’s why many students who aspire to become a doctor were not given the chance to pursue their ambition, unless their family can afford to spend millions for the education.
The good news is that there are scholarship programs offered both by the government and other agencies and even schools to deserving students.
Here are some of the options where students can apply for medical scholarship:
- DOH medical scholarship program
The DOH through Dr. Elvira Dayrit announced that the department will be offering medical scholarship program to deserving students who want to pursue of becoming a doctor. However, only those students who want to be assigned to underserved and far flung areas after passing the board exam will be granted scholarship.
Interested applicants may inquire to the DOH partner schools to undergo with the selection and screening process. Applicants who passed the screening will again undergo the evaluation and screening process by the DOH Scholarship Screening and Selective Committee.
- State Colleges and Universities
There are some state universities and colleges providing special grants to medical students such as the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. The grant is based on the residency status and capacity to pay as well as on merits like the Latin awardees.
- Local Government Units
Some local government units are providing medical scholarship programs to deserving students in their locality. After passing the board exam, the individual will serve the government-run hospitals.
- Private schools
Aspiring doctors should inquire from private schools. There are private schools in the country offering half and full scholarship to students with outstanding performance in their undergraduate studies.
