When people say old habits die hard, it is, most of the time, true. It also holds true when it comes to smoking. People who have been addicted to cigarette smoking for quite a long time find it so hard to quit the bad habit. Even if they are aware of the consequences, they just can’t seem to stop smoking and start the path to a healthier life.
If you are caught up in the same situation, here are some of the effective ways you can try to finally quit smoking.
1. Try nicotine replacement. One of the things that make cigarettes addicting is the nicotine content. So, what you can do is to consult your doctor and see the options you can explore for replacing the nicotine you get from cigarettes. Examples are nicotine gum, nicotine patches or lozenges.
2. Avoid triggers. There is no one else who could help you better than yourself, so in order to reduce the urge to smoke cigarettes, might as well stay away from the things that might trigger it. Throw away your stock cigarettes, the cartons, ashtray etc. When you leave the house, also stay away from smoking areas.
3. Set a quit date. Quitting is a matter of decision. People who say that they are gradually reducing the number of cigarettes they smoke a day are usually never successful but those who decide to make it happen in one are the ones who succeed. So decide on a specific date you want to quit. If you want to do it today, do it today.
4. Bring a healthy snack with you all the time. Replace cigarettes with something else like healthy food snacks you can munch on when you feel like smoking like nuts, sunflower seeds, sugar-free gum, etc.
For those who think that quitting cigarette is impossible, it is not. It is only a matter of making that decision.
